Over the past week I have had conversations about acid reflux with different individuals. One of these is being treated by his physician and together they are trying to figure out some of the symptoms and how to resolve them. I asked If they had explored any associations with sleep and they had not. After a home sleep test was performed, severe obstructive sleep apnea was discovered.
A recent article titled, “Association Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea Severity and Endoscopically Proven Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease,” states that the association between severe obstructive sleep apnea and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) exists and should be considered.
The take-home message is if you are struggling with acid reflux, do not forget your sleep! At Redwood Dental we understand how improper sleep can masquerade as GERD, heartburn, anxiety, stress and many other things. Our goal is to help you sleep better so you can breathe new life!
