Dry Mouth 101

Posted .

Dry mouth is an oral condition that occurs when you do not have enough saliva production to keep your mouth moisturized. It’s oftentimes associated with symptoms like a sticky feeling in the mouth, trouble chewing and swallowing, a dry tongue cracked lips, and more. Unfortunately, this condition can harm your smile more than you might realize, especially because it promotes cavity development and mouth sores.

Sometimes dry mouth can be caused by nervousness, stress, aging, chemotherapy, radiation, autoimmune disorders, and certain medications. The best way to treat the dry mouth is to treat the cause. Now, we know you can’t necessarily treat the natural process of aging, but other causes can be treated. All you need to do is visit your dentist, Dr. Troy Walton, and allow him to determine the cause.

To help you prevent dry mouth, it’s best to sip water throughout the day, avoid drinking caffeinated drinks, use products that help you produce saliva, chew sugar-free gum, and avoid tobacco and alcohol.
